Woman’s Clothes Kept Getting Mysterious Holes—Then She Grabbed a Flashlight

For months, a woman known as @violet.cav online, found herself perplexed by a domestic mystery. Every time she pulled her laundry from the washing machine, small holes dotted her clothing, as if chewed through by invisible moths.
The source remained elusive—until she turned off the lights, grabbed a flashlight, and looked a little closer. That washer, it turns out, had been hiding a small knife which had been damaging the clothing inside it.
The woman shared her discovery in a now-viral video posted to TikTok on April 8. Viewers were able to see her sighing in lighthearted frustration into the camera. The screen then cut to footage from inside the drum of the washing machine.
Using the flashlight, the woman revealed a thin knife blade emerging from a crevice in the washer’s interior. The blade, barely visible under normal lighting, protruded just enough to snag fabric during a wash cycle.
The video, overlaid with the text, “when you wonder why your clothes get holes in them sometimes and you take a good look with a flashlight in your washer,” resonated immediately with viewers online.
“And that’s been in there since before I moved in,” the woman explained in the caption.
TikTok viewers responded with a mix of disbelief, amusement, and horror. The post has since been liked more than 37,000 times and viewed over 590,000 times, leaving many users in hysterics and others rushing to inspect their own appliances. Some commenters shared that they were shocked at the lurking hazard.
“To be honest a prior tenant/home owner probably did construction and threw a pair of pants in with a pack of blades in the pocket without realizing,” one viewer said.
“Your guardian angel shoved it in there so you wouldn’t get cut grabbing a load of laundry out,” another added.
A third viewer commented: “Is this an episode of Black Mirror?”
“I’m sorry for laughing so hard,” another added.
“They warned us about Halloween candy but should’ve warned us about doing laundry,” another shared.
“Damn my first thought was that this was petty revenge from someone’s ex, but actually someone just forgetting to check their pockets makes more sense,” another viewer said, while another added: “Time to snap a blade off. That one is blunt!”
Newsweek reached out to @violet.cav for more information via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case.
