Singapore Open: Aaron-Wooi Yik claim men’s doubles crown after epic win

Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik completed a sensational week after they clinched the Singapore Open men’s doubles title after an epic come-from-behind victory on Sunday.
Chia-Soh beat in-form South Korean pair Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae 15-21, 21-18, 21-19 in a thrilling 65-minute contest at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
This comeback victory means the Malaysians have won their third title this year, having also become Asian champions in April and winning the Thailand Open last month.
More importantly, the Paris Olympics bronze medalists are proving themselves to become one of the most in-form pairs in the world.
They were featuring in their third final in three weeks, and there were some concerns about their fitness levels.
But Chia-Soh proved they are capable off delivering despite being pushed to the wire by their opponents.
Kim-Seo took the first game courtesy of their immaculate defence which frustrated the Malaysians.
Chia’s frustration boiled over early in the second game when he was faulted for his serve, which led him to confront the service judge before he was warned by the umpire not to do so.
But the world number three pair recovered from that setback to dominate their opponents and clinch the second game thanks to a brilliant attacking display.
That momentum gave them an advantage in the deciding game, and they looked set to comfortably win after holding a 15-10 lead.
But the world number 10 South Koreans battled back to within a point, and it called for Chia-Soh to keep their composure.
They did so in style, and claimed the big win when Soh fired in a shuttle at the front court which Seo could only push wide.
Chia-Soh became the latest Malaysian men’s doubles pair to win the Singapore Open after Zakry Abdul Latif-Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari did it back in 2008.
