How to nurture a long-distance friendship

Just because your bestie lives miles (or time zones) away doesn’t mean the bond has to fade.
Long-distance friendships can thrive with the right mix of communication, consistency, and creativity. It’s about showing up in the ways that matter—even from afar.
Here are some simple but meaningful ways to keep your friendship strong, no matter the distance:
1. Schedule regular catch-ups
Whether it’s a weekly FaceTime, monthly phone call, or voice notes whenever possible—having something to look forward to helps you stay connected.
2. Send random messages “just because”
A meme, a “thinking of you” text, or a random inside joke can go a long way. You don’t always need a big reason to reach out.
3. Share life’s everyday moments
Snap a pic of your coffee, your messy desk, or your dog doing something ridiculous. Sharing the mundane keeps things real and relatable.
4. Plan virtual hangouts
Watch a movie together on Teleparty, play games online, or just chill on video chat while you both do your own thing. Virtual presence still counts.
5. Celebrate milestones from afar
Send a card, a gift, or even a simple voice message on their birthday, work win, or any personal milestone.
6. Be there during the lows
Don’t just show up for the good stuff—check in when things seem off or when they’re going through a tough time. Long-distance doesn’t mean out of touch emotionally.
7. Plan visits (When possible)
Even if it’s once a year, planning an in-person reunion gives you both something to look forward to. And memories made IRL hit differently.
8. Get creative with communication
Send voice notes, handwritten letters, playlists, or even TikToks. Mixing it up keeps things fun and personal.
