Fubara Sends Commissioner-Nominee List to Rivers Assembly After Peace Deal with Wike

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has transmitted a list of nine commissioner-nominees to the State House of Assembly, marking a significant step toward normalizing governance following the protracted political crisis with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Assembly clerk Emeka Amadi disclosed the development in a statement, naming the nominees as Prof. Datonye Alasia, Tonye Bellgam, Temple Nwofor, Peters Nwagor, Charity Deemua, lawyer Tamuno Williams, Lekue Kenneth, lawyer Otonye Amachree, and Amairigha Hart.

The nominees are required to submit credentials and tax compliance documents. The move follows President Bola Tinubu’s fourth intervention in February, after which Governor Fubara dissolved the state executive council on February 12. The assembly subsequently withdrew its third impeachment move against Fubara and his deputy on February 19. The political rift between Fubara and Wike began in 2023 over control of the state’s political structures.

Key Points

The nomination list signals a return to normal governance functions after months of political paralysis.
The nine nominees represent the first batch, suggesting more appointments may follow.
The peace deal appears to be holding with concrete actions from both executive and legislative branches.
The withdrawal of impeachment proceedings removes a major source of tension.

Governor Fubara’s submission of commissioner nominees to the Rivers Assembly represents the most tangible evidence yet that the peace deal brokered by President Tinubu is taking effect, potentially ending the long-running political feud with his predecessor Nyesom Wike.
