CAF stripping Senegal of AFCON title is daylight robbery – Shehu Sani

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has said CAF’s decision to strip Senegal of the AFCON 2025 title is daylight robbery.

CAF took the decision on Tuesday, saying Senegal’s decision to boycott the final during play indicated a forfeiture. The association then awarded the title to ost Morocco, which lost the final on the field.

Reacting, Sani said, “Senegal won the AFCON on the Pitch but was snatched by CAF in the Boardroom; that’s unconscionable and a dangerous precedent in African football. The fact that the Senegalese team walked out in protest and returned to play till the final whistle doesn’t warrant this afterthought daylight robbery. They just want to reward Morocco for hosting and losing.

MyNigeria reported that the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) on Wednesday said it has taken note of the notification of the decision rendered on March 17, 2026, by the Appeal Jury of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), in the context of case DC23316.

The procedure followed the complaint filed during match no. 52 of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco 2025, between Senegal and Morocco.

By this decision, the CAF Appeal Jury declared the appeal by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) admissible and upheld it.

In doing so, the body annulled the decision previously rendered by the CAF Disciplinary Jury, on the grounds that the right to be heard of the appealing party had not been respected during the first-instance procedure.

The Appeal Jury further considered that the behaviour of the Senegal team fell under articles 82 and 84 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations. Consequently, the CAF declared that the FSF had breached article 82 and imposed the forfeiture of the match on Senegal, with a recorded score of 3-0 in favour of Morocco, pursuant to article 84.

The Senegalese Football Federation denounced the decision as iniquitous, unprecedented, and unacceptable, bringing disrepute to African football.

To defend its rights and the interests of Senegalese football, the Federation said it will, in the shortest possible time, initiate an appeal procedure before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.

“The FSF reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the values of integrity and sporting justice, and will keep the public informed of any developments in this matter,” it said.
