Searching young people’s phones is illegal – Police warn officers
Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Moshood Jimoh, has warned officers under his command against extortion, harassment, human rights violations and the unprofessional act of searching people’s phones.
Jimoh issued the warning during a strategic security meeting with deputy commissioners, area commanders, divisional police officers and tactical commanders in Lagos.
The directive, according to the police, aligns with the mandate of IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
Abimbola Adebisi, Lagos police spokesperson, quoted the commissioner as saying policing must be carried out with respect for citizens’ rights and dignity, adding that crime prevention “must be done with a human face.”
Jimoh described the illegal stop-and-search of youths’ phones as prohibited, noting that checks can only be conducted if the device is an exhibit in an investigation.
He added that such examinations must take place within police stations and strictly in line with the law.
The commissioner also highlighted recent breakthroughs by the command, including the arrest of Samsideen Oladiti, better known as Shameleon, who has been linked to two violent crimes.
He said officers also apprehended Jude Onouha, a suspected notorious vehicle vandal who posed as a security officer to infiltrate residential estates.
Jimoh added that John Samuel, an ex-convict and suspected armed robber, was caught during an attempted murder and robbery involving gold jewellery worth millions of naira.
“These successes reflect the commitment of the Lagos state police command to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure the safety of residents,” he said.
The commissioner urged Lagos residents to continue supporting the police with credible information.
